Your Whale Watching Guide for Central Coast

Central Coast
Whale Watching on Central Coast

Whether you are new to the Central Coast region of California, or you’ve lived here forever, when was the last time you went whale watching? Did you know that the Central Coast is one of the best places to spot whales? As whales migrate back and forth along the Pacific Ocean, you can spot them come up for air. As your Central Coast real estate agent, allow me to fill you in with more details!

There are three main whale species that you can spot along the Central Coast, which includes gray whales, blue whales and humpback whales. Every so often, you can spot an orca too, especially when the gray whales are swimming through in the spring season.

Humpback and gray whales are the most prevalent on the Central Coast. Humpback whales make it their part-time home from May through October. Gray whales, on the other hand, are spotted as they migrate to Canada, starting in mid-December, and when they migrate back to Mexico, through mid-May. In the spring, you could spot baby whales swimming alongside their moms! Blue whales are sometimes spotted in the summer months.

As whale watching is a year-round activity in the Central Coast, there are wonderful places to look for whales on both land and sea. On land, you can spot whales anywhere along the Monterey Bay coast, thanks to Monterey Submarine Canyon.

Here are more places to spot whales on your own:

  • Estero Bluffs State Park just north of Cayucos
  • Harmony Headlands State Park between Cayucos and Cambria
  • All along the Big Sur coastline, as it is elevated and easy to spot whales with binoculars
  • Point Lobos State Natural Reserve in Big Sur
  • Pismo Beach, Avila Beach, Morro Bay and basically all beaches and coastline stops on Highway 1
  • Ranger-led programs at Garrapata, Andrew Molera and Pfeiffer-Big Sur State Parks

If you can spot the ocean, you can stop and see if you spot any whale cruising by! However, if you want a closer look, it might make sense to take a boat tour out into the water. Plenty of tours are available along the Central Coast, too. These include:

  • Central Coast Sailing Charters and Patriot Sportfishing in Avila Beach
  • Sub Sea Tours and Virg’s Landing in Morro Bay
  • Monterey Bay Whale Watch, Randy’s Fishing Trips, Princess Monterey Whale Watching Cruises and Sanctuary Cruises Moss Landing in Monterey Bay

If you’re going to take a whale watching tour, dress in layers, as temperatures change on the water! Wear slip-proof shoes and sunscreen, and be sure to have your camera with you. Binoculars are a smart idea as well.

Enjoy trying to spot whales along the Central Coast anytime of the year! When ready to accomplish your Central Coast real estate market goals, I can help you with that any time of year as well.
