SLO County Hikes with Great Views

In my last blog post, I shared what you can do in Monterey County on a rainy day. Now let’s talk about when it’s a beautiful, sunny day in the Central Coast region of California! Days with blue skies and gentle breezes are perfect days for hiking in SLO County.

Lucky for you, there are some epic local hikes to choose from, each which will give you a 360-degree view of the gorgeous region around you. As your SLO County real estate agent, I’d like to recommend a few of these to you today.

  • Terrace Hill – This is a good one to start with if you’re not a novice hiker. This hike begins in San Luis Obispo, is only .9 miles in length, and will take you to 285 feet in elevation. You can look out at SLO, Cerro San Luis and Bishop Peak from the top, and it is especially beautiful during sunset hours.
  • Hi Mountain Condor Lookout – You can drive to this lookout point in Los Padres National Forest, but you’ll feel more rewarded if you hike it! It’s a 10.4 mile hike round-trip, which you can begin from High Mountain Road in Santa Margarita or Arroyo Grande, near Lopez Lake. You’ll end at 3,198 feet elevation, where you can take in vast views above Los Padres National Forest and all the way to the coast.
  • Cerro Alto – This lookout point is also located in Los Padres National Forest, but it begins from Atascadero and is about half the distance. The trail begins at the Cerro Alto Campground and is 5.35 miles round-trip. It’s shorter, but also steeper. You’ll end at 2,624 feet in elevation and can look out at the rolling green hills of SLO County and the Nine Sisters.
  • Shell Beach Bluff Trail – This 2.8 mile loop will give you a gorgeous overlook of the Pacific Ocean! Begin by walking along the Shell Beach bluff until you reach Avila Ridge, a steep hike that will bring you to the top. The end elevation is 700 feet, which will give you a view of Pismo Beach and Avila Beach. There’s even an iconic swing at the top!
