San Luis Obispo & Monterey Named Healthiest Small Towns, Too!

Central Coast
Healthy on Central Coast

Just last week in a blog post, I shared with you that Paso Robles made a list of the healthiest small towns in the U.S. Coincidentally, a list of the healthiest small towns came out shortly after that, from a different source, and this list included San Luis Obispo and Monterey on the list! We certainly live in a healthy region of the world, don’t we?

As your Central Coast real estate agent, today I’d like to share with you what made Health Science Degree Guide include these two Central Coast cities on their list of the healthiest places to live!

San Luis Obispo – One reason that they mentioned SLO being such a healthy place is the plethora of outdoor activities and attractions! Residents can spend time at the beach and the mountains all in one day. They mention that the ocean waters are cold here, but that doesn’t deter surfers from diving in. Inland, active people can enjoy hiking, cycling, jogging or mountain biking on all of the local paths and hiking trails, most notably at Prefumo Canyon, Shell Beach Ridge Trail and Bishop’s Peak.

Monterey – The article mentions that all residents in Monterey can get plenty of fresh air! Aside from the fact that the city is filled with a breeze straight off the ocean, little pollution or smog is found here for two reasons. One is the bike-friendly roads, and the other is the smoking ban on beaches. There are plenty of water-related activities to enjoy, such as scuba diving, sailing and kayaking. Inland, active people can enjoy a waterfront recreation trail while still getting great views of the ocean. Also, since the whole town is a national marine sanctuary and home to Monterey Bay Aquarium, residents in Monterey tend to appreciate and respect nature, which helps keep the area clean and beautiful.

I would also add that we have an amazing food scene in the Central Coast region of California! We grow and produce plenty of fresh produce, almonds, olive oil and more, and plenty of these goods are available straight from the farms, either at the farmer’s markets that fill every town, or at restaurants that serve farm-to-table dishes.

Both San Luis Obispo and Monterey also have lots of wine! Wine is made from fermented grapes, which are grown right here on the Central Coast, and wine is known for its health benefits as well. So whether it’s the active lifestyle you seek, the delicious local food and wine, or both, SLO County and Monterey County both have got you covered!
