Declutter Your Central Coast Home in One Month

Central Coast Real Estate
Decluttering tips for Central Coast homeowners

If you plan to sell your Central Coast home this year, it is essential that you begin decluttering now. Once you do, it’ll be much easier to clean, organize and stage your home to sell. Plus, studies show that decluttering your living space can lead to a happier, healthier life!

As your Central Coast real estate agent, allow me to fill you in on how you can clean out the clutter of your entire home in only one month’s time. Southern Living shared a day-by-day schedule to help you plan and organize. Here’s a summarized version of their steps.

Week One

  • Fill at least one trash bag with junk from anywhere in the house. If you end up filling more than one, great! Choose to toss, recycle or donate, depending on what’s in the bag.
  • Find 5-7 things that don’t have a designated place, and find one for them.
  • Pick any surface counter in the home and clean off all of the clutter.
  • Decide which ‘hot spots’ in your home need the most decluttering work, and then write down deadlines for each one.

Week Two

  • Conquer the bedrooms. Take everything out of drawers and under the bed, getting rid of anything you haven’t used, read, worn, etc. in the past year. Have a bin for anything you want to keep but not in the bedrooms.
  • Now focus on bedroom surfaces. Limit yourself to only five things displayed on each surface.
  • Conquer the closets. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Find a place for everything.
  • Conquer the kitchen. Tackle the Tupperware cabinet, and toss anything that doesn’t have a matching lid or bottom. Remove appliances you never use, and pots and pans that collect dust.
  • Go through your refrigerator and pantry and get rid of any expired food and spices or condiments you never use. Donate cookbooks you never read.

Week Three

  • Conquer the home office. Start with stacked papers, then declutter the rest of your desk surface, and then empty out your drawers.
  • Conquer the bathrooms. Do all of them together, so you realize how much soap, shampoo, lotion, etc. you have stored up. Clean out drawers, cabinets and surface areas, and find a place for everything you keep.
  • Conquer the living room. Put back items that have wandered from their homes, find homes for items that don’t have one, remove anything you have too much of and store smart.

Week Four

  • Conquer the laundry room.
  • Conquer the basement, attic and garage.
  • Sort through mail and unsubscribe to anything you never look at.

The rules are straightforward for each room. Get rid of anything you don’t use. Find a designated place for everything else. Keep everything in its designated places in an organized way.
