Apple Season in Central California!

While much of the country has to wait until fall to enjoy this delicious seasonal fruit, Central California already has a variety of juicy apples in season! Whether you enjoy picking them yourselves from the trees in a local apple orchard, or stopping by a farm stand, Central California has you covered. As your Central California real estate agent, I’m here to fill you in!

Avila Valley Barn in San Luis Obispo is where all the apple action is this time of year. They are open for the apple U-Pick season. To see what’s currently available to pick, you can check out this seasonal chart. In August, there are four varieties of apples, including gravenstein, gala, mutsu and jonagold. There are also still berries, peaches, nectarines, pluots, plums and more, so your best bet for a variety of fruit is right now!

It’s up to you whether you visit Avila Valley Barn as a quick trip to pick up fresh fruits and vegetables, or as an entire day or afternoon of family fun! The barn is stocked with pies, cobblers, muffins, sweet breads, ice cream and more. There is also a corn roaster and a full deli with sandwiches and other lunch items. You can also purchase hot BBQ food! Finish the day off with one of a dozen flavors of fudge.

Be sure to bring the kids, because there is a farm pet area for petting and feeding an array of farm animals, including goats, pigs, horses, alpacas, donkeys, ponies and more, with pony rides available on weekends from noon to 4 p.m. There are also hay rides for the whole family to enjoy, which run daily on U-Pick days from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

If you’re not quite ready for apple season yet, don’t worry. U-Pick apple season runs the rest of this month and into September. In October, pumpkin season arrives! You’ve got lots of time left to enjoy this Central California gem.

If you want an insider’s experience, check out the Avila Apple Festival Oct. 4 and 5. This includes a farm tour on a hayride and a farm-to-table dinner with fresh cider, apple wine, demonstrations, a film, an apple-themed dinner and much more. Early bird tickets cost $65.
