Sunscreen Tips for Lake Nacimiento!

Summer is here! Beautiful Lake Nacimiento is at peak levels, making for wonderful boating, fishing, swimming and water-skiing! Spending a day on the lake is a favorite pastime for everyone Living on Lake Nacimiento and for vacationers from miles around.

When you’re enjoying fun in the sun on Lake Nacimiento it’s easy to lose track of time! It’s also easy to get sunburned, and with summer just beginning, you’ll want to brush up on your sunscreen knowledge! Here’s some tips from the American Academy of Dermatology:

Sunlight consists of two types of harmful rays: ultraviolet “A” rays (UVA) and ultraviolet “B” rays.  (UVB)

UVA rays can pass through window glass and penetrate deeper into the skin. Therefore, you should use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of at least 30.

Sunscreens should be applied to dry skin 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors. Apply to all exposed areas, with extra attention to the face, ears, hands, and arms. Coat the skin liberally and thoroughly. Most people apply only a fraction of the recommended amount!

Sunscreens should be reapplied about every 2 hours, or after swimming or perspiring heavily. Even water-resistant sunscreens lose their effectiveness after 40 minutes in the water. Sunscreens also rub off, so if you’ve towel-dried, you need to reapply sunscreen.

Don’t reserve sunscreen for sunny days. Even on a cloudy day, up to 80% of the sun’s ultraviolet rays can pass through the clouds. Sand reflects 25% of the sun’s rays.

Sunscreens come in many forms. Thick creams are good for the face; sticks for around the eyes; gels for scalps and other haired areas of the body; lotions for overall skin coverage. Also use a lip balm that contains sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

A bottle of sunscreen has a shelf life of three years. However, if you are applying sunscreen as you should, your bottle shouldn’t be lasting three years!
