Visit Historic Spanish Missions on Central Coast

Spanish Mission on Central Coast

Have you visited one of the historic Spanish Missions on the Central Coast? Like I mentioned in my previous blog post about the history of Paso Robles, the Spanish Missions are a significant aspect of the rich history of our region. As a Central Coast real estate agent, I love visiting these Missions! It’s a great way to step back in time and see what brought Spanish immigrants to this area of the world.

Plus, it’s amazing what these monuments have been through over the ages, such as earthquakes, droughts, famine and disease, and yet here they stand, a true testament of time and durability. Now, these structures serve as museums and sanctuaries.

Here are three to consider visiting next time you have a free day on the Central Coast:

  • Mission San Miguel – This resides just north of Paso Robles on Highway 101. This adobe church was built more than 200 years ago, gaining its name from Archangel Saint Michael. It once housed more than 1,000 people! Now it is a State and National Landmark. Visit for a mass any day of the week, with sermons in English or Spanish, take a self-guided tour, or explore the museum.
  • Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa – This resides south on Highway 101 and was named after Saint Louis de Anjou. It was founded in 1772 and still hosts a dozen active ministries and offers outreach support to local communities. You may visit and tour the halls, attend a daily mass, visit the gift shop or join a Docent-led group tour.
  • Mission San Antonio de Padua – This is located north and off the beaten path, about 30 miles west of King City. This Mission was dedicated to Saint Anthony, whose statue still stands on the altar. This was built in 1771, and later was surrounded by Fort Hunter Liggett. Therefore, a town did not spring up around it. It is today a parish church run by the Diocese of Monterey.

Whether you want to find a place to meditate away from the hustle and bustle, you’re a history buff, an admirer of architecture, or you’d like to renew your faith, there are many great reasons to visit one of the Spanish Missions on the Central Coast. They offer us a peak into the rich history of the region!
