Central California homebuyer tips

Did you recently buy a Central California home, or are you in the process of buying one? As your Central California real estate agent, I’d like to share some tips with you on how to make a new house feel like home.

Anyone who has moved in the past knows that it can feel emotionally tolling to pack up all of your belongings from one house, full of memories, and move them to a new house, full of nothing but empty floor space and walls. But using these tips, you can turn that empty space into a homey space in no time!

  • Recreate familiarity. If you have prized possessions that you’ve carried from home to home, unpack those first. Hang the cuckoo clock that you’re used to having tick in the background. Unpack your radio to listen to your favorite station. Light your favorite scented candle. Make your new home feel as familiar as your last one, using your senses.
  • Unpack art and photos. You don’t want to hang artwork and framed photos immediately, because you might regret where you decide to put them. It’s smarter to wait until furniture is arranged and you see what a finished room will look like. However, you should unpack the art and photos, and just lean them against walls for now, so that you can still enjoy them.
  • Mimic routine. Just because your location has changed, your routine doesn’t have to. Try to keep your routine as usual as possible, which will in turn keep you relaxed and peaceful. Place your usual alarm clock on the nightstand next to your bed. Hang hooks where you can keep keys, coats or purses, the same as you did before. Buy the foods you’re used to and stock your pantry.
  • Get cozy. Feeling at home is all about feeling cozy and at ease in your own space. Therefore, it’s a good idea to settle into your new space with some physical comforts, such as clean bedding in the bedroom and soft throw pillows in the family room. If you have hardwood floors, consider some soft rugs to step on. If you have a fireplace, buy some firewood and fire it up!
  • Prioritize kids. If you have kids, focus on their rooms first. Unpack their toys, and have fun doing it. Find places for each toy and possession to go. Decorate. This is a nice activity for you to do together, instantly creating new memories in the new house, and it’ll make for a happy child, which in turn will make for a happy parent! The same goes for pets. Make them feel at home as soon as possible.
