Take a Staycation to Moss Landing in Monterey County!

Bird Watching in Moss Landing

As your Central Coast real estate agent, I’ve been keeping you informed on a variety of the communities that make up the Central Coast region. Today, let’s talk about Moss Landing, a quaint fishing village in Monterey County. While there aren’t too many real estate opportunities here right now, Moss Landing does make a great staycation for Central Coast residents! Drive over for a few hours, a day or a weekend. There is plenty to see and do.

To help you plan, and to get to know Moss Landing, here are a few suggested activities:

Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Reserve

This reserve is the remainder of an ancient river valley, which is still home to hundreds of species of birds and marine life. The main channel extends seven miles inland, and it feeds 2,500 acres of marshland and tidal flats! Learn more at the visitor center, take a guided nature walk at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, or sign up for a safari tour on a pontoon boat.

On your own, you can kayak the waters, hike the trails or watch for over 346 species of birds! Moss Landing’s Kayak Connection provides some of the calmest waters on the Pacific Coast, which is a great option for beginners. Plus, you can view seals, sea otters, sea lions, herons, egrets and more up close. Or, stick to land with a hike or bird watching, and bring your binoculars for closer views.

Local Moss Landing Dining

When you get hungry, support a local business in Moss Landing! The Haute Enchilada Art Café is a restaurant and an art gallery. Enjoy Mexican or traditional cuisine, admire the local art pieces hanging on the wall, or sit back and enjoy a live performance. Another great option is Whole Enchilada, which is near the docks. Enjoy traditional Mexican food, including local seafood with a Mexican twist.

Phil’s Fish Market is another option, and famous, as it was featured on Food Network’s Road Tested and Throwdown with Bobby Flay. See what makes this food so renowned! It is known for its cioppino, as the chef defeated Bobby Flay when both prepared a dish on the show.

Stay & Shop in Moss Landing

If you want to make a weekend out of it, there are some great places to stay right in the village. The historic Captain’s Inn at Moss Landing is right in town, with views of the water from the rooms, and a delicious breakfast served to guests each morning. You could also rough it a bit more and stay in the Moss Landing RV Park. In town, there are several antique shops that you could check out, along with art studios. Purchase some fresh seafood at one of the markets to take home with you!

You haven’t experienced the entirety of the Central Coast region until you’ve visited each one of the region’s quaint towns and villages. Each has something unique to offer!
