Simple Secrets for Organizing

closet picSpring is here. Officially. And in the midst of being outdoors and breathing in this gorgeous weather, it may be a great time to simplify and organize our closets, pantries, drawers and everything in between. Here are some tips that may come in hand if you feel overwhelmed on “where to start” with the organization process.

Create Rules. When organizing clothes, it is a good idea to define your standards. For instance, maybe you will choose to get rid of anything you haven’t worn in the past year; anything that has pilling, stains or holes; or anything that is not between a certain size range. Setting up rules can also work well for organizing a filing cabinet. Any items that are from before a certain date, can likely be tossed. Creating these rules can help the organizing go more smoothly with easier decision making.

Prevent leaving flat spaces empty. This may sound counterintuitive. But if a kitchen counter or dining room table is completely empty, it almost certainly WILL become a breeding ground for mail, school papers and clutter. It is better to put a decorative or functional piece there to simply take up the space you would normally dump things. For example, on a kitchen counter you may choose to put a fruit basket or a vase with fresh flowers. On the kitchen table, put a basket with wooden fruit or some tasteful placemats.

Items that need to go somewhere, belong in your car. If you have items that need to be returned to the store, a piece of Tupperware from your mother in law who recently brought you dinner, or even coupons to spend at a store—they should be kept in the car. If you are worried about the items getting squashed by children in your car, keep an “Errand Basket” or container in the car just to hold your returns. Chances are, if these items are kept in your house, they will get misplaced or forgotten about.

While you may be in the mood to organize in the spring, you may also have considered selling your house to buy a home that better suits your needs and creates a better space in which to stay organized. I have been selling homes in the Oak Shores area for a long time, and am an expert in this area. Perhaps you are considering a home in the Lake Nacimiento or Heritage Ranch areas—if so, I’m your gal! Give me a call and I can help assess your needs and work on finding the perfect home for you.
