How to Properly Declutter Your Central California Home

Declutter your Central California home

Decluttering is a necessary step to selling your Central California home. As your Central California real estate agent, I recommend doing it before you even list your home on the market, as it is much more visually appealing to buyers when it is clutter-free and clean!

The decluttering process is simple if you know what to do with items you’re getting rid of. You have the option of selling, donating, recycling, upcycling or throwing items away. Ideally, you would create a pile for each of these purposes. At the end of the project, your Central California home will look organized and appealing, you’ll have some extra dollars in your pocket, and you’ll feel good about donating items to those in need.

Still not sure what to do with everything? Here are some tips for items you might come across:

  • Hazardous household materials – Medications, paint thinners, asbestos and other hazardous materials need to be exposed of properly. Earth911.com and the app iRecycle can both help you find the nearest place to drop these types of items off at.
  • Old technology – Appliances, cameras, computers, TVs and other old technology can be recycled with Best Buy Recycle. You pay $100 to have the items picked up if you are not also having a new Best Buy item delivered to you. If your technology is new enough to sell, Gazelle.com will give you an instant estimate and shipping label for you to sell it to them.
  • Kids’ Items – Toys, clothes and other items you children outgrew can be sold to resale shops in the area, or on sites like Craigslist or eBay. A garage sale is another great option for items like this. Kids’ items are some of the most popular garage sale items, because they usually still look pretty new.
  • Books – Discover Books will try to find a new home for your books by connecting them with people who are looking for those particular books. If it can’t find a buyer, it will donate books to an organization that supports literacy, or it will recycle them. Cash 4 Books will pay for books it wants.
  • Linens – Old towels and blankets can be donated to a local animal shelter. They are always in need of these types of items! Some will even take items like heating pads and cleaning supplies. Contact your local shelter to see what they are in need of.

You could always host a yard sale or post items on Craiglist, eBay, Freecycle or Krrb to earn money, or to just give items away for free. You can also donate items to thrift stores or have organizations come pick them up from your house. You have many options!

Good luck decluttering. For more tips, check out this HouseLogic article. When ready to sell your Central California home, or when ready to buy a Central California home, contact me, your Central California real estate agent! I’d love to help you achieve your real estate goals.
