After continually posting Chimney Fire updates on this blog and on our Lake Nacimiento Facebook page, I am so thrilled to inform you that as of today, Sept. 6, the Chimney Fire is 100 percent contained!
There may still be lingering smoke, but CAL FIRE says this is not a threat to escape control lines. Should you see a large, dark column of smoke, you should report it immediately to 911. Crews will continue to remain in the fire area for several days, continuing suppression repair work.
As a summary, the vegetation fire began on Aug. 13 and blew through 46,344 acres before full containment was made possible today. During the duration of the fire, 49 resident structures were destroyed, along with 21 other structures. Eight structures were damaged, and only one injury was reported. There were over 4,000 personnel working on containing this fire!
From evacuations to road closures to knowing someone who lost their home, we’ve endured a lot lately around Lake Nacimiento. But many communities were spared, including Oak Shores, and the lake is now open to the public again, with the smoke-filled air becoming a memory.
We won’t soon forget this experience and all the heartache that came with it. But we also will never forget the brave firefighters and first responders who risked their lives for days in order to save our lives and our homes. It is because of their countless hours of work that we’ve reached 100 percent containment, and those of us who had homes to return to owe it to them. We owe them gratitude and prayers for the rest of our lives!
Our Hero Celebration went over wonderfully this past Sunday at Oak Shores! With 438 RSVP’s, we had quite a gathering for dinner, live music, face painting, drinks and more. This was an amazing fundraiser for our community, thank you to all who attended!
