Dry Farming at Paso Robles Wineries

Paso Robles Dry Farming Wineries

It is no secret that California is experiencing a significant drought period right now. As a Central California real estate agent, I find it refreshing to read about local wineries who are choosing to turn off the irrigation well and try “dry farming.” Whether for necessity or eco-friendliness, it is saving California water usage while still providing us with delicious wines!

Here are four dry local wineries in Paso Robles to know about:

  • Peachy Canyon Winery – This winery encompasses four estate properties on the Westside of Paso Robles. Here, they plant barley between the wines, which helps prevent erosion. Compost is used to promote water retention, so they use as little water as possible. Several vines of flavorful Zinfandel are grown on their dry farmed blocks.
  • Rotta Winery – Rotta’s first vintage winery was produced all the way back in the 1920’s in Paso Robles, so they’ve been using the land to make wine for quite some time now! Owner Michael Giubbini is known for dry farming and says it’s the only way to go in this region. His notorious Cabernet Sauvignon speaks for itself with its bold flavor.
  • Poalillo Vineyards – This family-owned vineyard has been around since 1992 and is known for its Syrah, Cab and Sauvignon Blanc varieties. However, their most popular offering is award-winning dry farmed zinfandel and zinfandel blends. Taste in point: 2005 Estate Zinfandel, which proves juicy grapes can come from dry grounds.
  • Rangeland Wines – everything connects at this winery. Cattle and sheep grave and fertilize the grass, and wines are “field crafted,” which means the fruit is grown and processed naturally. The winery includes two acres of dry farmed Petite Sirah and Zinfandel. Their theory is that irrigation water is not as fresh as rainwater, and can cause salt buildup, so some plants are better off without it.

When wanting to support one of these eco-friendly, dry farming wineries, call them up to find out visiting hours, and purchase some of their dry-farmed wines. See for yourself how potent the flavors of these wines actually are!
