Checklist after Buying a Central California Home

Central California Homebuyers
#1 Change the locks

If you recently bought a Central California home, congratulations! As a Central California real estate agent, I take pleasure in helping each of my Central California homebuyer clients find a home suited for them and their needs. If you still need to buy a home, contact me for assistance!

The hard part is over, but there are a few things you should do right before moving into your new home. This will ensure your home is safe and ready to be lived in. To help you prepare, I’ve created a checklist for you to look through:

  • Change the locks. When moving into any new residence, you don’t know how many people have copies to your keys. Therefore, it’s a safety precaution to change all of the locks on your doors, and to also reprogram your garage door openers and the garage door code. Safety comes first!
  • Change batteries. Find and check all of the smoke detectors in your home to see if they work. If they don’t, replace the batteries. This is true for carbon monoxide detectors as well.
  • Clean. Hopefully the home you are moving into is already in clean condition, but it wouldn’t hurt to have the carpets deep cleaned, so you know you are starting with fresh, clean carpets. Wash the windows, floors and walls too, or hire a professional cleaning company to do the work. This is easier to do before all of your belongings are moved in!
  • Change your furnace filter if necessary, and check the maintenance log on your furnace. Check your water heater temperature and maintenance log as well.
  • Clean out dryer vents. This can help prevent fires in the future.
  • Paint the walls. If the walls inside your home need a fresh coat of paint, consider doing that before your belongings are moved in. It is much easier to paint empty rooms than to try to paint around your belongings, and without getting paint on anything.
  • Check appliances. Make sure that all of your appliances are working as they should, whether they are appliances that were left in the home by the previous owners, or if they are appliances you are bringing with you. Make sure nothing is damaged during the move.

This is a great checklist to get you started after buying a Central California home. Once you are moved in, check out my previous blog post about how to make your new house feel like home in no time.
